History:
Fifty-four years ago, Orochimaru was born in the Village Hidden in Leaves, and the world has never been the same. Both his parents died when he was young, and he was thence made a ward of the Hokage.
He was recognized as precocious at an early age, and enrolled in the Academy years ahead of most students, graduating at the age of six at the top of his class. He was placed with the top kunoichi of the graduating class, Tsunade, and the bottom student, Jiraiya. Their sensei was a man named Sarutobi, the student of the First and Second Hokages—a worthy man to take on a team of genin who would become Legendary. He was the one person that Orochimaru looked up to, and the only one after his parents’ death who gave him any parental affection.
Orochimaru showed a marked aptitude for ninjutsu, learning things at a blazingly fast pace (mastering the most advanced summoning jutsu at an early age, and contracting with the snakes), always thirsty for more knowledge beyond what he’d learned. He was haughty and aloof, but such things are not uncommon for a once-in-a-lifetime genius. For that is what Orochimaru undoubtedly was, and with him, Tsunade and Jiraiya prospered as well. They worked beautifully together as a team, a fact that did not go unnoticed by others outside of the village.
The Great Shinobi Wars were going on at this time, and Team Sarutobi was sent out often to the most dangerous parts. It was on once such foray that the three shinobi fought with the then-leader of Amegakure, Hanzo, who was so impressed by their great talent that he gave them the title of the Legendary Three, and they carried the name after that.
At some point around this time, Orochimaru felt a curious hunger. He had devoured every jutsu given to him—but he knew there were hundreds, thousands more out in the world, in the secret vaults of every village including his own. There was, however, one thing Orochimaru knew he would run into—Time, that kidnapper of wit and strength, was working against him. He was in his prime, but how long would this pinnacle of his strength last? The thought of dying without completing his goal terrified Orochimaru, and he set about studying the darkest secrets of his art. To further his ends he established laboratories around the world, recruited talented medic-nins and scientists, and set them to work on creating jutsu and researching the secret to immortality.
A stroke of luck came to him in the form of Juugo, a young man with a mysterious enzyme in his body that caused his appearance to change and made him fly into violent rages. Orochimaru extracted this enzyme and gave it to one of his labs to use in a jutsu he envisioned would mark his most loyal followers. To help this experimentation, and that continuing on the problem of becoming immortal, Orochimaru kidnapped shinobi indiscriminately. Every rank, from Academy student to ANBU, went missing without a trace.
He also took a student around this time, a girl named Mitarashi Anko, deeming her the only one worthy of his tutelage. She, in her blind loyalty and her young love for her teacher, followed him everywhere he went. Orochimaru used her remorselessly in the end, as he used everyone. When the experimentation with the enzyme was complete he made Anko one of his test subjects for his Heaven Seal. He told her to keep it a secret, and she did.
But, still in the favor of his sensei, Orochimaru swanned through it all seemingly untouched. There were suspicions—there were always suspicions—but nobody could pin anything to him or connect his name to any disappearance. It was with this smudged but untainted record that Orochimaru put his name in for consideration as the Yondaime Hokage. He was confident that his link with the Third Hokage, his teacher, would make him a shoo-in against the other man, Namikaze Minato.
It was not to be; Sarutobi had long seen a darkness in Orochimaru’s heart, an arrogance and unmindfulness for the well-being of others that scared him. In his own love for his favorite student he had tried to stamp it out, but Orochimaru had only cunningly hidden it. Namikaze Minato was chosen as the Yondaime Hokage.
In a rage, Orochimaru began to sever ties with Konoha. His behavior became more and more erratic, as he slowly shifted his center of power from the Leaf, where he had grown up, to other of his bases. It came down to one night, after Tsunade’s lover had died and she had left, and after he had been invited to join a newly-formed organization of S-Class missing-nin. Orochimaru abandoned Anko, took what little was left of his things, and left the village for good.
He took up with the Akatsuki, as this organization was called. Orochimaru was partnered with Akasuna no Sasori, and allowed to study and work on his jutsus at will. He perfected the jutsu that would allow him to transfer chakra, spirit, and knowledge from one body to another. In effect this jutsu allowed him to live as long as he had a fresh body to transfer to when the old one wore out. But Orochimaru would not just settle for any body. He wanted the best, one that would aid him in his own goals, and when thirteen-year-old Uchiha Itachi came to join them, Orochimaru thought he had found his prize. The Sharingan, able to copy any jutsu and predict the moves of enemies, appealed to him, and he coveted it, making every attempt to get closer to Itachi.
When he did, it ended in disaster; Orochimaru was foiled by Itachi during a confrontation. Itachi cut off one of his hands, and told him he would never have the Sharingan under his control. Taking his severed hand, Orochimaru fled to one of his bases in the Land of Rice Fields. Insidiously he took over this country, and it became the Land of Sound, with its own Hidden Village, Otogakure. He was aided by his right-hand man, Yakushi Kabuto. Once a spy sent by Sasori to keep an eye on Orochimaru, he became fanatically loyal to the Snake Sannin. Orochimaru transferred bodies, and went traveling, stirring up trouble and attracting followers as he went. At some point he transferred to a second body, and continued on his travels.
He found Kaguya Kimimaro on one such trip, a boy with a kekkei genkai that allowed him to manipulate his own bones and re-grow them almost instantly. Attracted by this regenerative ability, Orochimaru took the boy under his wing and away from where he had been locked up by his family in fear. Grateful, Kimimaro swore that he would follow Orochimaru to the ends of the earth, if it was required of him. Orochimaru intended for Kimimaro to be his next vessel, and the young boy took this role on with great pride.
He was unable to, however; stricken by a wasting illness, Kimimaro was rendered unfit, and Orochimaru had to once more begin the search for a suitable host. This took him back to Konoha, where the Chuunin exams were about to begin. He had long wished revenge upon Konoha for the misdeeds he imagined done to him, and this was his chance not only for revenge, but also to collect the young man he’d cast his eye upon in his search. Uchiha Sasuke, younger brother to Uchiha Itachi who had defeated him, was ripe for the picking.
Orochimaru killed one team and disguised himself and two others using the same genjutsu that made him appear his old self whenever he switched bodies. In the Forest of Death he gave Sasuke the same seal that he had given Anko. She encountered him too, finding the faceless bodies of the team Orochimaru had slaughtered and confronting him after he had marked Sasuke. She intended to kill them both with a suicide jutsu, but he stopped her easily and told her not to interfere any more, or it would ‘ruin his fun.’
His attack did not go as he had planned it. Orochimaru had intended to kill the Third Hokage and take control of the village, but using the same technique Minato had to seal the Kyuubi inside Naruto, the Third sealed away Orochimaru’s arms, rendering him unable to use his massive repertoire of jutsus, and causing the physical arms themselves to deaden.
Unable to take Sasuke back with him as planned, but needing his arms to be healed, he appealed to his former teammate Tsunade, telling her he would resurrect her dead brother and lover if she healed him. At the same time, Jiraiya and Naruto were in town, and asked Tsunade to become the Fifth Hokage. Tsunade knew where her loyalties lay, and it was not with Orochimaru. A huge battle between the three former teammates ensued, and Orochimaru was sent back to Otogakure even worse off than before. It was time for the transfer, and he sent the Sound Four, his elite guard, to Konoha to collect Sasuke.
Like so much else for Orochimaru, it did not go as planned.
Sasuke arrived, but all four of the elite guard sent to fetch him were dead, as well as Kimimaro who had gone to perform this last task for his beloved master. It was too late, and Orochimaru had already transferred bodies by the time Sasuke arrived, ready to answer to Orochimaru’s offer of power enough to kill Itachi for what he had done to Sasuke’s family.
For three years, Orochimaru trained the Uchiha, giving him a sword and teaching him to control the curse seal that was placed upon his shoulder. But he underestimated Sasuke, didn’t think that the boy would come to his room on the appointed day for the transfer ready to kill at last—him.
They fought, and Orochimaru revealed his true form. Endless years of experimentation upon himself had given him the appearance of a giant white snake, comprised of many smaller white snakes. The battle ended on the plane where Orochimaru transferred himself into Sasuke’s mind—and was trapped there, Sasuke gaining dominance over him and keeping him contained within the seal.
Orochimaru lay inside—defeated, but not dead, waiting for the chance that he would get when Sasuke, drained of chakra from fighting his brother one last time, tried to continue to use jutsu. Orochimaru burst forth from the seal and challenged Itachi himself, only to be run through with Susanoo’s sword. He is assumed dead at this point in time.
Personality
Orochimaru has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He is not misunderstood; he is simply an evil man. There is something to be said, however, for his charisma, as throughout his life he has drawn people to him. He is undeniably attractive to those who seek power, as he offers it freely. They should beware him though, for he may offer gifts and his teachings in one hand, and hold a knife behind his back.
Orochimaru is loyal to nothing but himself, but expects loyalty from those who are in his employ or who learn from him. He betrays without a second thought but punishes those who betray him. He is cruel, amused by the suffering of others, and enamored of constant warfare and violence (war is all he has ever known; the Great Wars began before, so he was constantly around it). He cannot envision a world without it. Orochimaru often says that when things are peaceful, they are boring to him, and he seeks to stir things up. And yet he dislikes change that he is not in control of.
He is intelligent and arrogant, overconfident, prideful, boastful, and conniving. Do not look to him for an alliance, or if you do, be sure that you are more powerful than he is, that’s the only way he’ll follow you. He will break bonds without a moment’s thought the moment you are no longer of any use to him. Orochimaru will suck you dry and leave you, shriveled, in the dust.
His greatest fear is death, and he will do anything to avoid it and save himself.
